Our history

From one trainee in 1970 to a recognised degree programme today.

A short history of how dental hygiene became an established Allied Health Profession in Malta.

A short history of the profession in Malta

From a single trainee in 1970 to a university-recognised degree programme today — the story of dental hygiene in Malta is one of steady professionalisation.

1970 — the first call

The Government of Malta issued a call for applications for a trainee dental hygienist with the eventual scope of sending the successful candidate to the Royal Dental Hospital, London, to read for a Diploma in Dental Hygiene.

1976–77 — UK training

In 1976, after some initial preparatory training in Malta, the candidate was sponsored to attend training in the United Kingdom. She returned to Malta in 1977 to begin her career — and to plant the seeds for a Maltese hygiene programme.

1979 — the first local course

A three-year course leading to a Diploma in Dental Hygiene Therapy was established. The first candidates enrolled in 1979.

Today — a recognised BSc (Hons)

The programme has since grown into a three-year BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene degree, run by the University of Malta — bringing the qualification in line with international peers and opening up a wide range of clinical, educational and research opportunities for graduates.

2013 — the Association is founded

On 19 July 2013, a group of 13 dental hygienists came together to formally establish the Malta Association of Dental Hygienists — giving the profession a unified voice and a structure through which to engage with health authorities and the wider public.
